Well Mannered

If The Mercer defined downtown New York’s discreet luxury for one generation, The Manner suggests what comes next. Situated on a charming section of Thompson Street, the 97-room hotel occupies familiar territory in SoHo, yet feels quite forward-thinking in its approach to hospitality. Here, the emphasis is on atmosphere.

Developed by Standard International as a more intimate counterpart to The Standard’s extrovert personality, The Manner replaces the traditional hotel hierarchy of lobby, lounge and restaurant with spaces that feel almost residential. At its heart is The Apartment, a collection of living rooms reserved exclusively for guests, where breakfast drifts into informal meetings and evening drinks. The effect is at once comfortable and glamourous.

That domestic sensibility extends throughout the interiors by New York-based Studio Roslyn, which draw on the richness of 1970s Milanese modernism. Walnut panelling, lacquered finishes, velvet upholstery and carefully judged colour create rooms that feel collected, with an obvious confidence to the design. The hotel’s restaurants continue that considered approach from the The Otter on the ground floor, to the rooftop eatery Sloane’s, which offers expansive downtown views. 

The Manner also marks another notable collaboration with architect and designer Hannes Peer, who worked closely on the project’s creative direction. Known for interiors that layer historical references with contemporary craftsmanship, Peer’s influence can be felt less through overt gestures than through an overall sense of warmth.

Where hotels once competed to become destinations in themselves, there is growing appeal in places that offer something quieter. The Manner belongs to this new generation of properties that prioritise intimacy and ease over exclusivity and spectacle.
