Issue 09

In issue 09 of Design Anthology UK, we’ve taken a good, long look into the past. We decamped to the beautifully restored Kimpton Clocktower Hotel in Manchester for a shoot of of-the-moment design pieces for autumn. The Grade-II listed building, former home of The Refuge Assurance Company, tells the story of a prospering city at the tail end of the 19th century, when construction began in 1891.

We also celebrate another architectural gem of the north, the brutalist beauty Preston Bus Station. Conceived in the 1950s, this Lancashire hub was once one of Europe’s most architecturally ambitious interchanges – though by the 2000s it was neglected and threatened with demolition. Photographer Samuel Ryde tells of his connection to modernist bus stations up and down the country and his reasons for capturing this particular one, which was restored in 2018.

This, plus design news, hotel openings, upcoming art exhibitions and our style picks for Autumn.
